Website Tips
The Top 5 Secrets to a Successful Website

Why do some websites do better than others?

Have you spent a lot of time on designing your website but no one's looking?

Do you want to make your website special enough to be viewed over and over again?

The story is a familiar one. You were excited and ready for business the day your website went up and now you find it gathering dust. Well, let's dust it off. You didn't create your website to be invisible. It's there for the world to see.

There are many ways to make your website a successful one. The Internet is full of website advice. But time and time again I see people create websites that somehow miss the simple rules of success. Even a simple website should follow these rules. As a web designer, I have found that there are 5 basic website tips that lead to success.

Here are 5 easy ways to get your website seen again and again by visitors and potential clients who are out there just waiting for you.

1. Make your website easy to navigate

Fancy menus look nice as long as they look like menus. I can't wait all day looking for the page I need. Actually I can't wait 2 minutes. There is always another site on the horizon. Your visitors want easy menus toward the top off your page where the action is. Catch my eye and I'll click.

When you're creating your website, put your menu near your exciting and unique content. Grab my interest and I'll click again. But be careful, I can't wait for fancy animation to kick in. And I'm not going to download some special application just to look at your site. Look around on the web. The most successful websites have simple, easy navigation.

2. Improve your website content

How current is your information? How up to date is your content? How fresh is your material? Good content is important and current content is a must. If your content is fresh, visitors will come back again and again. Websites are not like a stock investment that you let sit there and wait for it to mature. You can't build your site then turn your back on it. Search engines want changes and so do your visitors.

3. Take it easy on the images

Images are great. You want your site to look good and so do your visitors. But no one seems to want to wait more than 15 or 20 seconds for a page to load. That's just the way it is. Too many images will bog down your site. After a minute, your visitors will give up on you. They know the Internet is supposed to be fast and so should you. Of course, you don't want a page full of just text; that would be boring for all concerned. But there is some middle ground.

And remember, if you are looking at your own site and you've been there before, your browser remembers it and loads it faster. Be aware of your first time visitors, it may not be loading so fast for them.

4. Interactive Interactive Interactive

Your site is not a newspaper or a magazine that's just meant to be read. Your visitors want to participate with you. Give them the opportunity. Make your website as interactive as possible. Whether it's a contact form or a newsletter to sign up for. They want to interact with you and I know you want to interact with them. Even the most simple website can benefit from interaction.

5. Give them something NEW

There are a lot of websites out there. Are you offering the same information, services or content as they are? What sets you apart? Think about this and exploit it for all it's worth. Originality will get repeat visits to your site. Remember to ask yourself this question: Why is my website special? When you have the answer, let the world know. The Internet has no limitations and neither should you.

The Internet serves a lot of different needs. In some ways we've barely scratched the surface of all it can be. Whether for business or generating ideas, the possibilities are limitless. Visitors to a website behave a certain way and have certain expectations. Awareness of this will lead to success when it comes building and designing your website.

These 5 website tips are certainly a great way to start getting repeat visitors and achieving your online goals. They may be the most important things to keep in mind when you create your website.
